One of Saint John’s quaint little customs is providing every cruise ship visitor with a flower (having never been on a cruise, I have no way of knowing if this is common in ports of call). The flower is a beautiful gesture which conveys the following:

Welcome to Canada. Thank you for spending money here. May the lovely fragrance of this flower block out the smells of our charming industrial city.

As someone who works uptown, frequently buys lunch uptown, pays for uptown parking, and spends a hefty amount of money in uptown shops, I have just one question: Where’s my flower?
